A browser is a computer program – also known as software or app – that you can use to get to the internet. You can think of a browser like an on ramp when you are getting onto the interstate. Once you get on the interstate, you can go wherever the highway goes.
The same applies to a browser – the browser gets you to the internet. Then, you can go wherever you need to go to do the work you are planning to accomplish.
Child Support has used Microsoft Internet Explorer in the past. Now there is Microsoft Edge instead. Sometimes users experience problems when using Edge. The solution is to use a different browser.
Google Chrome
Google Chrome has been shown to be a reliable and stable internet browser and DHS has made this browser available on all DHS computers.
To begin using Chrome, simply find the icon on your desktop or taskbar and double click it.
Once the Chrome browser opens a website, you can travel the internet just as you did using Edge.
Bookmarks and Favorites
If you have saved several websites using Favorites (bookmarks), you can transfer your bookmarks from Edge to Chrome. Here’s how to do that:
With Chrome open, look in the upper right corner for the three vertical dots (these three dots mean “more”) and click on them. Select “Bookmarks and lists”, then “Import bookmarks and settings.”
A menu will appear. Click the down arrow to open the dropdown menu and select the browser you’ve been using – Edge. Also, be sure the button for Favorites/Bookmarks is checked, then press “Import.”
Creating bookmarks is a little different in Chrome. When you are on a webpage that you want to bookmark, click on More – the three vertical dots in the upper right of the page – and select “Bookmarks and lists.” You will get a selection of what you want to do with bookmarks. Select “Bookmark this tab…”
When you click on this, you will be offered a location to place your new bookmark. The last folder that you saved a bookmark in is what will be showing. However, there is a dropdown menu to select a different folder. If you need to create a new folder for your bookmark, the last choice in the dropdown menu is “Choose another folder.”
This opens a new window that allows you to edit your bookmark. Click “New folder” at the bottom to create your new folder. Don’t forget to name your bookmark. You can do this at the top of both the “Bookmark added” window or the “Edit bookmark” window.
Now that you know how to create a bookmark, here is how you find it when you want to use it again.
Click the More dots and choose “Bookmarks and lists.” The menu that opens has some of the recent websites you saved as bookmarks. If the one you are looking for is not in the list, click on “Other bookmarks” at the bottom of the list. Now you can see all of the folders and individual bookmarks you have created. Simply click on the name of the bookmark and Chrome will take you there.
The Bookmark Bar is handy if you use the same websites a lot. To get websites onto the Bookmarks Bar, first, ensure that the “Show all bookmarks” in “Bookmarks and lists” is selected. When you create a new bookmark or editing an old one, place it in the folder named “Bookmarks bar.”
Tabs
If you are familiar with tabs in Edge, you can use the tabs in Chrome. At the top of websites is what looks like file folder tabs. They may have an X or a plus sign (+) on them. The X means you can remove that tab. The plus sign (+) means you can add a new tab. This new tab will be a Google search page with your frequently used websites listed.
If you want to rearrange the location of your tabs, simply click the tab and drag it to where you want it. You can even drag a tab out of the window to create its own window.
Sometimes we accidentally close a tab. To reopen it, click the More dots, History, then look under the “Recent tabs” heading. If you have closed the entire window, reopen Chrome and follow the same instructions. You will have the option of reopening all of the tabs you just closed
Set Your Homepage
DHS has control over what your homepage is, so you cannot change that. DHS uses the Our InfoNet Home as the default homepage.
Those are the main features of the Google Chrome browser. Because of its stability and ease of allowing most any website to function correctly, it is the preferred browser. If you haven’t been using it, give it a try!
