Purpose
The first step of progressive discipline is employee engagement. Employee engagement may be utilized to correct infractions of statute, policy, practice, or procedure regarding work performance or behavior. Employee engagement can include:
- A warning
- A discussion
- A corrective interview
- Coaching
- Counseling
- Performance improvement or professional development plans
- An oral reprimand; or
- A letter of concern
Requirements
Supervisors consult with their assigned Human Resources management (HRM) Employee Relations unit personnel analyst prior to issuing a performance improvement plan, professional development plan, or a letter of concern.
Initiating employee engagement may be a verbal process. However, documentation of employee engagement is noted and maintained by both the supervisor and the employee.
If the next step of the progressive discipline is warranted the supervisor informs the assigned HRM Employee Relations unit personnel analyst that previous employee engagement has occurred and forwards signed copies of all documents provided to the employee.
