HOPE Testimonial Spotlight: Stefanie Hanson

This Spotlight series is focused on presenting the amazing stories of fellow CSS employees. These incredible testimonies exemplify CSS’s HOPE-Centered approach. Through goal setting, the creation and recognition of pathways, and enduring willpower we can achieve inspirational accomplishments, both within CSS and our personal lives. The inspiration you receive from these stories could open your own eyes to new goals you thought were impossible or pathways to achieve the important goals you have already set for yourself!

Stefanie Hanson has worked for CSS for since she was 19 years old and is now the contract monitor for the State Disbursement Unit (SDU). Stefanie tells a short part of her story in this video and responded to a follow up written interview. Here is what she shared:

Encouraging Stories – Stefanie Hanson

Stefanie Hanson started as a temp with CSS and grew to love the work and the people. She found that by always saying yes and being open to pathways, she grew in knowledge and was able to be successful as well as be of service to others.

The Science of HOPE teaches us that pathways are the strategies or opportunities we utilize to achieve our goals. Sometimes, we may not even know what our goal is or maybe we can only see the small goal in front of us without knowing the greater goal it is leading to. Stefanie provides a great example of enthusiasm and openness for following pathways that present themselves even when she is unsure of her ultimate goals!!!

“I probably already said this, but I cannot say it enough – you should not be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone! Whether that means volunteering to be a new workgroup, or applying for a promotion.” Stefanie demonstrated how she chose to overcome her fear of public speaking by taking a chance on herself and applying for the PFR position.

This is what the Science of HOPE teaches!! When you hear her describe it, she is explaining how she has turned what was once a fear of hers into a pathway for her goal to help others!

“The longer I’ve worked for CSS, the more confident I have become in myself. That confidence made me less afraid to apply for the job I have now.”

Stefanie didn’t lose HOPE, even when the temporary position was eliminated due to budget issues. Instead, Stefanie found an alternate pathway to full-time employment with CSS. “I’ve been ultra passionate about my job since I started and I’ve really never lost that passion. I think that appreciation and passion for my job has been sustained because I know what it feels like to leave and come back. I gained perspective that CSS was truly a special place to work. I applied for an FTE position as soon as I could!”

And she continues to be hopeful. “I am always hopeful about CSS. We have so many people who have been here a long time who are just as passionate about their job and CSS as I am! That kind of passion is contagious and trickles down.”

This is what the Science of HOPE is describing with these two guiding principles: HOPE begets HOPE and HOPE is a social gift. Stefanie’s HOPE is nurtured by those around her while she simultaneously does the same thing for them. This is the exact kind of culture we are striving for in a HOPE-Centered workplace!

“I truly love my job. I feel so lucky each day to come to work and be able to assist staff in so many different way – whether that is with Finance, CE or HR. I never get tried of seeing an email come in, or a chat pop up. Being able to say “I can help!” is truly the best part of my job.”
“Co-leading Finance CE and developing relationships with team members both at CSS STO and with district office strengthened by commitment & reinforced my role within the division with helping children and families in an indirect way. Keeping CE “alive” and always making sure resources are up-to-date so staff have the information and guidance they need is so important. I am so proud of the work and strong relationships I’ve built with this team.”

Stefanie started with CSS not knowing where this new pathway for her would lead and it became her passion. In her time with CSS Stefanie has become a living pathway for CS specialists across the state. Keeping an open mind and being willing to face new challenges can lead to amazing results and we can all agree Stefanie is a shining example how effective that can be in personal and professional development!
